What Makes a Flower "Pollinator-Friendly"

Not every flower is equally attractive to bees and butterflies. Pollinators are drawn to:

Open, single-petal blooms rather than heavily "doubled" ornamental varieties, which often hide or lack nectar
Bright colours — particularly purple, blue, yellow, and white
Clustered flowers that offer a lot of nectar in one landing spot
A steady succession of blooms across the growing season, so there's always something flowering

Designing a Pollinator-Friendly Layout

Plant in clusters, not single stems. A patch of five marigolds is far more visible to a passing bee than five scattered singly through the bed.
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Most pollinators are most active in direct sun and prefer some shelter from strong wind.
Leave a shallow water dish with a few pebbles in it — bees need water too, and a shallow dish prevents them from drowning.
Avoid pesticide sprays on open blooms. If pests appear, treat in the evening when pollinators are less active, and choose a targeted, mild option like neem oil over broad-spectrum insecticide.

Simple Care Tips

Deadhead spent blooms regularly (marigold and zinnia especially) to encourage continuous flowering rather than seed production.
Water at the base of the plant rather than over the flowers, which keeps blooms intact for longer.
Feed with a balanced organic fertiliser every few weeks during the main flowering season.
